Last weekend (30th September/1st October) we headed to Rockingham Motor Speedway for rounds 19, 20 and 21 of the 2017 Pickup Truck Racing Championship, and the concluding rounds of the 2017 Rockingham Oval Championship. With no practice session it was straight into qualifying, and with a few tweaks to the #37 pickup we were ready for Sunday’s 3 races.
With a little apprehension in the air, this being Neil’s first outing on the Oval since his big crash back in 2016, it was time for race 1. As the race got underway it was clear that the track was quite wet and very slippery but as the race continued you could see Neil confidence returning with a solid 12th place finish.
As race 2 approached the rain slowly began to fall and it wasn’t long before the officials declared it a wet race. However after analysing the track the decision was made to run 2 wets and 2 slicks. As we continued to prepare for race 2 we then noticed how fast pit lane was drying so we decided to swap the other 2 wet tyres for slicks which proved to be a great decision. Neil had a great race, battling along side Mark Willis #65 and Antony Hawkins #98, bringing it home in 8th place.
The grand final then saw a 35 lap race where Neil had a brilliant battle with Chris Land #77, after a squirrelly moment at Turn 4 where the back end stepped out Neil and Chris continued to battle, Neil finishing 9th place with just 0.196 of a second separating the pair.
We had a great weekend and it was so brilliant to be back on Rockingham’s monster 1.5mile oval. We would also like to say massive congratulations to Mark Willis #65 and the team on becoming this years Rockingham Oval Championship, very well deserved and as always all of our sponsors who without all this wouldn’t be possible – Premier Sports, EVP Ltd, NASCAR Fans UK, L & N Graphic Designs and Wizard Embroidery.
